Toddler dies of methanol poisoning after parents use industrial alcohol to treat fever

Well meaning parents wanted to help reduce the fever of their young daughter, but they actually poisoned her.

The 2-year-old died of methanol poisoning in Dongguan, China, after her parents applied industrial alcohol to her skin to help her fever.

Xiao Dong came down with a fever on Saturday. Her father took a bottle of industrial alcohol from his business and used it to clean the child’s armpit in the hope of reducing her temperature.

Minutes later, Xiao Dong fainted and was rushed to the Children’s Hospital in Shenzhen.

“When they came to the hospital, they did not know that the alcohol caused this,” Ma Weike, a doctor at the hospital, said. “They thought it was the fever that caused the child to lose consciousness,” Weike added.

Sadly, Xiao Dong died of methanol poisoning the next day.

Xiao Dong’s parents said that they had heard that alcohol can be used to lower the fever of a child, but were not aware of the dangers.

Industrial alcohol has a 95 percent methyl content and is easily absorbed into the skin, especially children.

According to Weike, the father used about 1,000 ml of industrial alcohol on Xiao Dong, an amount which could be lethal, even to an adult.
