(Scroll down for video) A man was arrested, charged and convicted of attempted murder after sending a ricin-laced birthday card to the new boyfriend of his former girlfriend, prosecutors in Pennsylvania said.

Now, 20-year-old Nicholas Helman of Doylestown, was sentenced to serve up to 40 years in prison after placing a ricin-laced birthday card in the mailbox of his former girlfriend’s new boyfriend.

Helman was found guilty of attempted murder and risking a catastrophe. According to the police investigation, Helman ordered castor beans on the Internet and produced ricin in his home.

He bought a scratch and sniff birthday card and covered it with a lethal dose of ricin. He placed the card in an envelope, walked several miles to the house of Jake Palm, and placed the card in the mailbox.

Helman later boasted about the birthday card to a colleague at Target. That colleague alerted police, and police were able to get to Palm before he opened the envelope with the card.

After tests confirmed that the card contained ricin, Helman was arrested in the apartment he shared with his mother.
